The D-backs keep losing players, but winning games.
On Monday, they dealt right-handed pitcher Jon Garland to the Dodgers, yet also managed to beat them, 5-3, in front of 45,211 at Dodger Stadium.
The win was the fifth in a row for the D-backs, who learned earlier in the day that they would be without the services of closer Chad Qualls for the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery on his left knee.
“The group is coming together, we’re having fun, we’ve won a few games in a row now,” D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’re playing contenders and keeping our spirits up, our competitiveness up. I’m proud of this group.”

Left-handed reliever Clay Zavada has garnered plenty of national attention this season for his unique mustache. His facial hair, which is comparable to the mustache Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers once sported, thrust him into the spotlight when he was recalled from Double-A Mobile on May 12.
But with the way he has pitched, that focus will soon be turning to his pitching. In 19 games, Zavada is 1-1 and hasn’t allowed an earned run. But don’t tell him he’s been flawless. “I haven’t been perfect at all,” Zavada said. “I’ve messed up things. I haven’t been [anywhere] near close to perfect.” Zavada has not been completely flawless, but he’s come close. Opponents are hitting just .203 against him in his first season in the Major Leagues.

D-backs starter Dan Haren tried to hide the smile as he jogged around the bases Tuesday against the Reds.
Moments before, he had just hit the first home run of his career to left field to give the D-backs a six-run lead in the sixth inning. Forgive Haren for smiling. In a midst of a five-game losing streak, he and his teammates had very few reasons to be happy.
