Brandon Webb got the news he was hoping for Monday. The D-backs’ right-hander underwent successful minor surgery on his right shoulder in Arlington, Texas, which revealed that he did not have any tears in his labrum.

Instead, Dr. Keith Meister performed what is known as a debridement, which is the surgical removal of lacerated, devitalized or contaminated tissue. Webb said that some shaving was done to the labrum area where it was frayed. The so-called gravel has kept Webb from pitching since Opening Day this year, but he said he was told that he should be ready to go for Spring Training next season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are NL West rivals. Now they’re partners in a spring training facility planned for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Phoenix.

Under an agreement announced Thursday, the tribe will build an 11,000-seat ballpark and a complex that includes 12 practice fields, training facilities and offices. The facility is expected to be ready for the 2011 exhibition season. The 140-acre site is adjacent to Scottsdale. It is believed to be the first major league spring training facility on tribal land.

As Brandon Webb continues his three-city tour of orthopedic surgeons, the details on the severity of his shoulder injury remain sketchy. But it appears Webb could be facing surgery to repair a torn labrum, a procedure with a reputation as daunting as any in baseball.

Although it has long been considered an injury from which few pitchers recover, medical advancements have made torn labrums less of a career killer. If Webb does need the surgery, he doesn’t have to look far for proof he can make it back. “You can be the same guy you were before you got hurt,” said Diamondbacks reliever Jon Rauch, who had shoulder surgery when he was a minor leaguer in the Chicago White Sox system in 2001.
