Chris Snyder noticed the difference almost immediately.
The D-backs’ catcher underwent microdiscectomy surgery on his back on Wednesday, and not long after the anesthesia wore off he knew his back was better.
“It’s completely different now,” he said by phone Monday. “I feel much better. Obviously, it’s still sore from where they did the incision, but as far as what I felt before, that’s gone. There’s no more shooting pain down my leg.”
Snyder’s back has bothered him almost all season, and it finally landed him on the disabled list June 23. If he had to do it all over again, Snyder would have had the surgery at that time and possibly missed the rest of the season.

Costly turnovers on offense. Critical breakdowns on defense. Boos from the home crowd. Sounds like the same old Arizona Cardinals. After a 31-10 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night, the defending NFC champions are 1-2 heading into their bye week.
The once-feared offense of Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin — Pro Bowlers all — has produced two touchdowns and five turnovers in two home losses.
It’s not what coach Ken Whisenhunt expected, but he’s preaching patience.
“I don’t think three games in that you hit the panic button or that you think, we want to blow up what we’re doing,” Whisenhunt said at his Monday morning news conference.
That may be true, but some serious tweaking is in order during the week off.
Among the top priorities: shoring up an inconsistent offensive line that appeared overmatched at times against the Colts.
Arizona gave up four sacks, two to star defensive end Dwight Freeney. Leading 21-3 at halftime, the Colts were able to forget about defending the run and go after Warner, who is about mobile as a down marker and had hip surgery in the offseason.

The Arizona Cardinals have a sellout for Sunday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
In order for a game to air live on local television, NFL rules require it to be sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff. The Cardinals said Thursday that all tickets were gone.
The Cardinals have now sold out all 36 games they have played at University of Phoenix Stadium, which opened in August 2006.

The last few weeks of a baseball season pose many challenges physically and mentally. They are even greater for a team like the D-backs that will not be going to the playoffs.
“I think everybody at this point in the season is worn down, but the adrenaline that kicks in when you’re in a pennant race can take over,” D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. “When you’re not in the pennant race and you’re physically worn down or mentally down you have to dig down very deep to get yourself out of that rut.”
That’s the challenge the D-backs face right now, with several young players still trying to get established in the Majors.
“It’s all part of growing and maturing into a productive big leaguer for 162 games,” Hinch said.

Rob Gronkowski took part in a full practice Monday, ending two months of inactivity and sparking optimism that the Arizona Wildcats’ star tight end could play this weekend at Iowa.
Gronkowski has been limited since the start of training camp with a strained lower back. He missed the UA’s wins over Central Michigan and Northern Arizona.
Gronkowski’s return couldn’t come at a better time.
Arizona (2-0) opened as a six-point underdog against Iowa, which has won 39 of 47 home games dating to 2002. The Wildcats ran the ball 61 percent of the time in their first two victories; they will have to throw more to gain yards against a Hawkeyes defense that’s ranked 16th nationally in scoring defense.

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao may have thrown out the ceremonial first pitch on Tuesday night, but it was Mark Reynolds who provided the knockout punch at PETCO Park.
Reynolds slammed his 42nd home run, a two-run shot off Heath Bell in the top of the ninth inning, to snap a 2-2 tie and give the D-backs and pitcher Dan Haren a 4-2 victory over the Padres.
Eric Byrnes accounted for the first two D-backs’ runs. He hit his sixth home run off Padres starter Wade LaBlanc in the third inning to give Arizona a 1-0 lead and then doubled home Brandon Allen in the seventh, tying the game at 2.

The D-backs keep losing players, but winning games.
On Monday, they dealt right-handed pitcher Jon Garland to the Dodgers, yet also managed to beat them, 5-3, in front of 45,211 at Dodger Stadium.
The win was the fifth in a row for the D-backs, who learned earlier in the day that they would be without the services of closer Chad Qualls for the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery on his left knee.
“The group is coming together, we’re having fun, we’ve won a few games in a row now,” D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’re playing contenders and keeping our spirits up, our competitiveness up. I’m proud of this group.”
